January 31st 1999:

The Rotary Club of Geraldton had decided to launch the idea of doing a Memorial to the 645 men lost on the HMAS Sydney. Because of our past Memorial work, particularly The Memorial to the Australian Army in Anzac Canberra, they approached us to develop an initial concept.

On the 31st of January1999, Jim Patterson, President of The Rotary Club of Geraldton and his wife Elaine came to visit us at our Studios in Gidgegannup, for the first discussions about the possibility of designing a Memorial to the HMAS Sydney II at Mt Scott, Geraldton.

They briefed us on the Project and told us the tragic story of the loss of the HMAS Sydney sunk somewhere off the West Australian Coast in the Indian Ocean on the 19th September 1941 and not yet found.

We suggested going to Geraldton to see the Site so that we could get a ‘ feel ‘ for the area and also to make a presentation of our past works to the Rotary Club of Geraldton.
